He was predeceased by: his parents, Leonard, Sr. Groom and Mae Groom of Huntingdon, Tennessee.; his brother Jimmy Groom; and his granddaughter Rhonda. He is survived by: his wife Opal Joyce Kennon Groom; his children, Valdia McAdoo Tribble of White House, Cynthia Kay Ott of Collierville, Phyllis Ann Groom Armstrong (Tommy) of Collierville and Phillip Andrew Kennon Groom (Katherine) of Bartlett; and his sister Evelyn Turner of Jackson, Tennessee.. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
