He was predeceased by: his wife Mary Kate Smith; his parents, John T. Smith and Ollie Mae Grasham; and his siblings, Fred Smith, Herbert Smith, J. R. Grasham and Anna Robinson.

He is survived by: his children, David Smith of Clinton, Sandra Smith-Cooper (Wendell) of Powell, TN and Sheila Smith-Oleson (David) of Jefferson City, TN; his grandchildren, Kristy Moore (Chris Roberts) of Halls, TN, Isaac Cooper of Halls, Joseph Birchfield (Jessika) of Churchhill, TN and Alexander Adkins of Clinton; and his great grandchildren, Savannah Moore of Halls, Gage Moore of Halls, Mia Cooper of Halls and Vince Birchfield of Churchhill. He is also survived by many other family members and good friends.
