He was predeceased by: his wife Martha "Marty" May Veenis Hess. He is survived by: his children, Eric John Hess of Defiance, Ohio and Jennifer Lynn Blaylock (Chuck) of Cleveland; his grandchildren, Trey Hess, Sean Blaylock, Erin Hess, Mason Taylor, Cole Taylor and Jadin Blaylock; and his great grandchild Neyland Blaylock.

Visitation was held on Thursday, September 19th 2024 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church (501 Washington Ave, Defiance, OH 43512). A funeral service was held on Thursday, September 19th 2024 at 3:30 PM at the same location.
