He was predeceased by: his parents, Rev. George Gooden and Ruby Satterwhite Gooden; his siblings, Doc Gooden, George Gooden, LaVelle Gooden, Varnell Gooden, Mae Ruby Blake, Annie Ruth Ross and Mary M. Scott; and his son-in-law John Wade.
He is survived by: his wife Gloria Driver Gooden; and his children, Samuel J. Gooden of Chattanooga, TN, Sandra D. Hudgins (Marvin, Sr.) of Chattanooga, TN, Gina Griffin (Darryl, Sr.) of Chattanooga, TN and Gloria J. "Spanky" Gooden of Chattanooga, TN. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, in-laws, and friends.
