He is survived by: his wife JoBeth Smith Hurt; his children, Susan Bedsole (Richard), JoAnna McCall (Allen Law) and James Robert "Jimmy" Hurt, Jr. (Courtney); his grandchildren, Sara Bedsole, Drew Bedsole, James Robert "Trey" Hurt, III, Brooks Hurt and Holt Hurt; and his brother William Whitfield Hurt of Knoxville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Florence.
