He was predeceased by: his parents, James Ewing Ballard, Sr. and Anne Mathes Ballard; and his brother Stuart Ballard. He is survived by: his wife Debbie Thompson Ballard; his children, Catherine Lamar Parry (Arthur), James Ewing Ballard, III (Mary) and Alexander Mathes Ballard (Caitlin); his grandchildren, Jayme Ballard, Madeline Parry, Eva Ballard and Virginia Ballard; and his siblings, Lolly Durant (Dan), Arthur Ballard and Abbie Brooks (Jay). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
