He was predeceased by: his parents, John Farley Spruiell Sr. and Bessie Evelyn Venable Spruiell; his siblings, John F. Spruiell Jr. and Frances B. Smith; and his daughter Rebecca Lynn Spruiell Horton.

He is survived by: his wife Janet Walker Spruiell; his son John Walker Spruiell (Kim Duncan); his grandson Walker Allen Spruiell; and his son-in-law John Mark Horton.
