He was predeceased by: his parents, James Edward Cathey and Virginia Mai Johnson Cathey; and his brothers, Jackie Cathey, Glen Cathey and James Anthony "Catfish" Cathey.

He is survived by: his wife Tina Rose Herrell Cathey; his daughters, April Rose Harper (Dereck Myles Thompson) and Michelle Rae-Cathey Crowder (Michael Eric Crowder); his brothers, Watson Cathey and Darrell Cathey; and his granddaughters, Hailey Marie Harper, Allyson Kayte Crowder, RubyMae Lindsey Crowder, Mackenzie Brooke Harper and June Riley Crowder.
