He was predeceased by: his parents, Bufford Lee Bates and Izora Ora Rosson Bates; his wife Louella Bates; and his siblings, Nathaniel Bates, David Lee Bates and Minnie Fay Bates.

He is survived by: his children, Jennifer Bates and Jeffrey Bates; his siblings, Ann White, Joyce Fielder (Harry) and Kenneth Bates (Pam); his grandchildren, Terry Brake (Alicia) and Billy Bates; and his great grandchild Brayden Brake.
