He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter Coates and Estelle Coates; and his siblings, Walter A. Coates Jr., Arthur Coates, William Coates, Rash Elkins Jr., Charlie Elkins, Addie Bell Nash, Annie Mai Coates, Ethel Lindley and Nell Hickman.

He is survived by: his wife Willie B. Coates of Centerville; his children, Melissa Filson (Mark) of Dickson, Melinda Sullivan (Ed) of Nunnelly and Ronald Coates of Centerville, Tennessee.; his grandchildren, Marcy Brooks (Brock), Marny Mullins (Josh), Matthew Filson (Barbie), Marlee Corn (Ricky), Maggie Filson, Douglas Gammons (Katy), Jennifer Mnick (Derrick), Jeff Sullivan (Dana) and Jon Sullivan (Leslie); his great grandchildren, Jeb Brooks (Morgan), Jaime Brooks, Owen Mullins, Ethan Mullins, Ian Mullins, Dean Filson, Autumn Filson, Connor Butts, Logan Butts, Kaidence Butts, Landon Gammons, Layton Gammons, Parker Mnick, Emmerson Mnick, Carson Mnick, Rachel Sullivan, Rylee Sullivan and Rebekah Sullivan; and his great great grandchild Charlotte Butts.
