He was predeceased by: his parents, James "Jim" McKinney and Joyce McKinney; and his brother Stephen McKinney. He is survived by: his wife Barbara McKinney; his children, Sarah Baucom (William) of Clemmons, NC and Michael Lindler (Wan Mei) of Charlotte, NC; his granddaughter Caroline Baucom; his siblings, Mark McKinney (Pam) of Arlington, TN and Carol (David) of Blountville, TN; his nephews, Nathan Morley (Bonnie), Matt Morley, Josh McKinney (Becky), Andrew McKinney and Stephen McKinney (Krystal); and his niece Deborah Smith (Mark).

Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may donate to the Waterfall Keepers of North Carolina at 283 Inman Branch Road, Waynesville, NC 28786.
