He was predeceased by: his parents, Ernest Ray and Lila Halbrook Scates; his brothers, Carl Scates and Paul Scates; and his grandson William Devault.
He is survived by: his wife Betty Jane Smith Scates; his children, Debbie Devault and Mike Scates (Lori); his grandchildren, Melissa Cox, Monica Hollingsworth and Jonathan Devault (Kristin); his great grandchildren, Kaitlyn Starr (Austin), Kristen Cox, Kylie Hollingsworth, Connor Hollingsworth, Kasper Malchow and Kaylee Devault; and his great great grandchildren, Riley, William Starr and Baylor Mathes.
