He was predeceased by: his parents, William Cates and Cassie Watson Cates; the mother of his children Melba Russell Cates; and his daughter Dana Cates. He is survived by: his wife Sandy Wilson Cates of Jackson, TN; his children, Robby Cates (Lindsey) of Mercer, TN, Kevin Cates (Natalie) of Medina, TN, John Sinclair (Andrea) of Ash Flat, AR, Amy Hilliard (Brett) of Bells, TN and Sarah Smith (Elam) of Brownsville, TN; his brother Danny Cates of Whiteville, TN; his sister-in-law Jean Gray of Brownsville, TN; his close friends, Bill Sullivan and Bubba Goodman; his grandchildren, Russ Cates (Anna Claire), Jordan Cates, Nathan Cates, Charlie Cates, Layla Sue Cates, Neyland James Cates, Andrew Hilliard (Loren), Emma Englert (Rowdy), Mason Sinclair, Maddox Sinclair, Manning Sinclair, Nolan Sinclair and Lennon Smith; his great grandchild Lainey Cates; his mother-in-law Betty Wilson; and his brother-in-law Steve Wilson.
Visitation was held on Monday, April 21st 2025 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM and on Tuesday, April 22nd 2025 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the Lea and Simmons Funeral Home (1280 S Dupree St, Brownsville, TN 38012). A funeral service was held on Tuesday, April 22nd 2025 at 1:00 PM at the same location.
