He was predeceased by: his parents, Harold Martin Akers and Joyce Elizabeth Hillman Akers; his father-in-law Leo H. Rutherford; and his grandparents, Thomas McKinley, Willie Bessie Boyd Akers, Roy Grenade and Martha Inez Hillman.

He is survived by: his wife Barbara; his sister Cheryl Holdway (Tim); his mother-in-law Aileen Rutherford; his brother-in-law Herschel Rutherford (Linda); his nieces, Dr. Kelly H. Coches (Mike) and Alysia H. Peppler (Allen); his nephew Alex Holdway (Amber); his great-niece Peyton Peppler; his great-nephews, Jackson Coches, Emmett Coches and Marshall Peppler; his godsons, Kevin Smith (Shallon) and Kris Smith (Claudia); and his granddaughters, Valentina Jolie Smith, Daisy Mae and Duchess Marie. He is also survived by family members and friends.
