She was predeceased by: her parents, Louis Knipling and Virginia Sheehan Knipling; her husband James Smith, Sr.; her son Shawn Smith; and her grandson Steven Wayne Smith.

She is survived by: her children, James Smith, Jr. (Jane), Virginia Marie Lekan (Jake), Kevin Smith (Carol), Colleen Parsley and Wayne Smith; her grandchildren, Derik Smith, Tiffany Smith, Ryan Lekan, Lynsi Rice, A. J. Lekan, Lena Lawson, Kimi Smith and Jordan Marsh; and her brother Xavier Knipling. She is also survived by seven great grandchildren.
