He was predeceased by: his wife Helen Bates; his children, Lennis Edward Bates, Jr. and Angela Lewis; his parents, L. J. Bates and Hester Lillard Bates; and his sisters, Inez Ballew, Evalynn McConkey, Betty Burris, AnnaRuth Bates, Agnus Young and Katherine Green.
He is survived by: his grandson Nicholas Lewis (Katie); his sister Alice Hunt; and his great grandchild Grayson Lewis.
