He was predeceased by: his parents, Jewel Madison Akers and Margie Marie Johnson Akers; and his brothers, George Akers, Charlie Akers and Frank Akers.
He is survived by: his wife Matha Dale Sanderson Akers of Menglewood, Tennessee; his children, Roy Akers of Dyersburg, Jimmy Akers of Finley, Jewell Edward Akers of Dyersburg, David Scott Akers (Leeann) of Lane, Tennessee, Judy Biggs (Kevin) of Cat Corner and Cindy Reasons (Alan) of Hayti, Missouri; and his siblings, Bob Akers (Wanda) of Valparaiso, Jessie Ray Akers (Michelle) of Manchester, Tennessee and Tina Hale of Trenton, Tennessee. He is also survived by sixteen grandchildren and thirty-one great-grandchildren.
