He was predeceased by: his mother Juanita Tate Smartt; his wife Pricilla Christine Knight Tate; his son Jerry Tate Jr.; his brother Larry Layne; and his son-in-law Kendal Wooten.
He is survived by: his daughters, Kristy Wanamaker (Steven Tittsworth), Mendy Scruggs (Jeffery) and Miriah Wooten; and his siblings, Johnny "Hoss" Whitman, Vernon "Bud" Whitman, Marlin Whitman, Carol Brady and Phoebe McGee (Vic). He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
