He was predeceased by: his parents, James Reid and Edna VanNorstran Shields; his wife Virginia Montalbano Shields; his daughter Michelle Davis; and his half-brothers, Frank Scott and Earl Scott.

He is survived by: his daughter Charlotte Sloan (Billy) of Baxter; his brother James Russell Shields of Wartburg; his grandchildren, Samantha Brinas, Jason Archung, Dominic Brinas (Bryanna), Jeremy Davis and Blanca Cruz; and his great grandchildren, Mia Davis Cruz and Olivia Archung.
