He was predeceased by: his parents, Sidney Abel Smith and Bessie Young Smith; and his siblings, Henry, Edward, Henrietta, Eva Elois, Nellie and Elbert.

He is survived by: his wife Joyce; his brother James Thomas Smith (Martha); and his children, Trina Maclin (Rodney), Corlis Mitchell (Kevin), Wanda Chunduru (Ravi), Tracie Bardwell (Michael), Jennifer Little (Melvin), Sidney Smith (Laquissa) and Christopher Smith (Wendy). He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
