He was predeceased by: his parents, Carl Edward Hughes and Joyce Mae Hughes O'Daniel. He is survived by: his wife Zelma Russell Hughes of Athens; his children, Amy Hughes of Athens and Andrew Hughes; his daughter-in-law Jamie of Athens; his grandchildren, Jacob Walker (Sarah) of Athens, Alex Hughes of Athens, Savannah Hughes of Athens, Makayla Hughes of Madisonville, Emily Hamby of Athens and Skyler Autrey of Athens; his great grandchild Brantley Hughes; and his siblings, Terry Hughes of Athens, Cheri Choat (David) of Etowah, Carla Fields (Jason) of Athens, Johnny Hughes (Vickie) of Niota, Tommy Hughes (Karen) of Athens and Paul Hughes (Tina) of Athens Along. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
