She was predeceased by: her parents, Mary Florence (Connelly) and Edward P. Donnelly; and her brother John Fitzer. She is survived by: her husband Daniel Gergen; her children, Rebecca Gergen and Francis Gergen (Holly); her granddaughter Kailyn of Sioux Falls; her foster daughter Helene Bich Nguyen (Duyen Ho); her grandchildren, Eileen Ho (David) and Vincent Ho (Lisa) of San Jose; her great grandchildren, Jaron of San Jose, California, Vivi of San Jose, California, Desmond of San Jose, California and Damian of San Jose, California; and her siblings, Kathleen Evans (Mike) of St. Louis, Edward Donnelly (Linda) of Elk Point and Maureen Fitzer of Memphis, Tennessee. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and many, many friends.
Visitation was held on Thursday, January 16th 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and on Friday, January 17th 2025 at 9:30 AM. A wake was held on Thursday, January 16th 2025 from 7:00 PM to 7:30 PM at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory (601 W 21st St, Yankton, SD 57078). A Mass of Christian burial was held on Friday, January 17th 2025 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the St. Benedict Catholic Church (1500 St Benedict Dr, Yankton, SD 57078). A burial was held on Friday, January 17th 2025 from 11:45 AM to 12:00 PM at the Sacred Heart Cemetery North Douglas (509 Capital St, Yankton, SD 57078).
Memorials may be made to the Mount Marty Nursing Program Scholarship Fund, established by Julie and her fellow 1964 Mount Marty Nursing School class or the Avera Sacred Heart Foundation – Hospice which provided Julie and her family dignity and great comfort during her final days.
