He is survived by: his wife Betty Jean Smith; his son Loren Merchen; and his siblings, Jim Merchen, Lynn Merchen, Clayton Merchen, Ralph Merchen, Lawrence Merchen, Margaret Pike and Kathy Merchen. He is also survived by four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
