He was predeceased by: his parents, Lambert Knippling and Alice Knippling (Kintigh); his wife Karen Knippling; his former wife Donna Larson Knippling; and his siblings, Robert Knippling (Ethel), Helen Peterson (Wayne), Katherine Van Balen (Ross), Margaret Schnell (Frank) and Howard Knippling.
He is survived by: his children, Brenda Reis (David) of Chamberlain, Rocky Knippling (Donna) of Chamberlain, Karla Hofhenke (Doug) of Huron, Roxanne Holm of Ashley, ND, Barry Knippling (Sherri) of Chamberlain and Shannon Dirk (Scott) of Vale; his siblings, John Knippling (Cheryl) of Wessington Springs, Joe Knippling (LeAnn) of Flandreau and Carol Marsh (Larry) of Newberg, OR.; his friends, Joe and Tara Lopez; and his son-in-law Barry Holm.
He was also honored by the Casey Tibbs Foundation Match of Champions for his contributions in the sport of rodeo.
