He was predeceased by: his parents, George H. Pittenger and Caroline Osborn Solomon Pittenger; and his grandson Kristian M. Mattson. He is survived by: his wife Rosemarie Angerio Pittenger; his son Dwight Wesley Pittenger; and his grandchildren, Margaret Larkin (Eric), John D. Pittenger II (Valorie), James H. Pittenger (Caitlin) and William A. Pittenger. He is also survived by 21 great grandchildren.
