He was predeceased by: his parents, Wilbur Olsen and Ruth Olsen (Green); his brother David Akins; and his parents-in-law, Gerhard and Ormalyn Boetel.
He is survived by: his former wife Sally Kennedy; his wife Merolyn Boetel Salter; his children, Shawn Olsen (Kathy) of Dupree, SD and Lisa Stapert (Jason) of Tumwater, WA; his stepsons, Tim Salter (Rebecca) of Chancellor, SD, Brian Salter (Teresa) of Sioux Falls, SD and Jamie Salter (Tammy Jo) of Gilbert, AZ; his grandchildren, Tristan, Bridger Stapert, Emily, Spencer Olsen, Jake (Sarah), Ben Salter (Ellie), Autumn Leavitt (Logan), Noah Salter and Chloe Salter; and his former wife Sally Weyer of Rapid City, SD.. He is also survived by 4 great grandchildren, and numerous step grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A memorial has been established to the First Baptist Church in Viborg and The Gift of Life House in Rochester, MN.
