He was predeceased by: his parents, Louise (Timp) and John J. Schmidt; his sisters, Marilyn and Bernice Schmidt; and his great grandchild Cooper Hinrichs.
He is survived by: his wife Judy Grau; his children, James Schmidt (Michelle) of Tolstoy, Anna Lytle (Jay Guerrero) of Kingsville, TX, Barbara Lutz (Troy) of LaPointe, WI and Mary Schmidt of Aberdeen, SD; his siblings, Leonard Schmidt (Donna) of Roscoe, SD, Norbert Schmidt (Gloria) of Spearfish, SD, Vernon Schmidt (Carolyn) of Hoven, Kenneth Schmidt (Evelyn) of Aberdeen and Virginia Hawkinson (Bonnie Taylor) of Hoven; his grandchildren, Jacqueline Hinrichs (Alec) and Kyle Petersen; his great grandchildren, Camden, Charlie and Calvin; his nieces, Anna, Barbara and Mary; and his nephew James.
