She was predeceased by: her parents, Gustav Merkel and Hilda Merkel (Wiest); her husband Lawrence; her siblings, Edward, Ervin, Lorraine, Albert, Bernie and Leo; her great grandchild Cole Bertolotto; and her grandson-in-law Chance Veurink.
She is survived by: her sister Mary Elizabeth Merkel; her children, Laura Maier (Rich), Lyle Hertel (Rose), Marty Hertel (Delrita Troska), Marlo Hertel (Virgil Armajo), Myron Hertel (Shelly Ferdig-Johnson) and Melissa Schneider (Pat); and her siblings, Louise, Milton, Alma, Eugene and Jim. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren, many in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, February 18th 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Kirk Funeral Home & Cremation Services (1051 E Minnesota St, Rapid City, SD 57701). A funeral service was held on Tuesday, February 18th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the Funeral Kirk Funeral Home & Cremation Services (1051 E Minnesota St, Rapid City, SD 57701). A burial was held on Tuesday, February 18th 2025 at 2:30 PM at the Black Hills National Cemetery (20901 Pleasant Valley Dr, Sturgis, SD 57785).
