He was predeceased by: his parents, Julius Backman and Mary [Jorgensen] Backman; his wife Gladys; his son Bryan; his daughter-in-law Julie Backman; his grandchildren, Allison, Lee and Leah; his great grandchildren, Skyman Jr., Skylynn, LeAndra, Lee and Michael Isiah; and his siblings, Jens Backman, Pearl Ammann, Norma Madsen, Viola Taylor, Marlys Ballhagen, Marlene Eneboe and Eunice Berwald.
He is survived by: his children, Kathy Redday of Sisseton, SD, Leon Jr. of Beardsley, MN, Carolyn [Jim] Senske of Watertown, SD, Tim [Renee] Backman of Lake Preston, SD, Kim [John] Cozad of Wentworth, SD and Carrie Backman of Wilmot, SD; and his brother Donald [June] Backman of Wilmot, SD.. He is also survived by 31 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and a few great-great children.
