He was predeceased by: his parents, John Hilla and June Hilla (Smith); and his great grandchildren, Zaydyn, Noah, Ness and Avery.
He is survived by: his sibling Chris; his wife Linda Corinne Hilla of Sioux Falls, SD; his children, Kelly Schmidt of Sioux Falls, SD, James Schmidt Sr. (Stacy) of Harrisburg, SD, Joanna Hilla (Shawn Magee) of Sioux Falls, SD, Chris Hilla of Sioux Falls, SD and Curt Hilla of Sioux Falls, SD; his grandchildren, Amber Hakala (Cory), Joe Schmidt (Michelle), Ray Schmidt, Rebecca Brinkman (Austin Inouye), Rachael Brinkman (Matt Hisel), James Schmidt Jr., Tristan Schmidt (Maliyah Shaw), Kaleb Hilla (Paris Powell) and Kyla Hilla (Rudy Zavala); and his siblings, Peggy Schut of Aberdeen, SD, Bernard Hilla (Nancy) of Clearwater, MN and Mike Hilla of Aberdeen, SD. He is also survived by many other relatives and friends.
