He was predeceased by: his parents, Ed Hanssen and Elsie Hanssen (Kalweit); his son Kevin Hanssen; and his sister Lucille Hanssen. He is survived by: his wife Lois; his sons, Arlen Hanssen (Mary), Kelvin Hanssen (Michelle), Kim Hanssen and Keith Hanssen (Lynn); his grandchildren, Kelvin Jon Hanssen Jr. (Candi), Shelby Hanssen, Gabrielle Hanssen, Tayler Hanssen, Keiana Hanssen and Kenzee Hanssen; and his great grandchildren, Abigail Hanssen, Samantha Hanssen, Max Hutchinson, Vincent Hutchinson and Emlyn Hafer. He is also survived by grandson, five granddaughters and a great-grandson.
Ervin was diagnosed with progressive Alzheimer's dementia in late 2016.
