He was predeceased by: his parents, Alvin Heckel and Alma Heckel (Schmidt); and his brother-in-law James Hamblet. He is survived by: his wife Maureen Waltner of Sioux Falls; his children, Christine Reither (Alan) of Oakdale, MN and John Heckel (Jonda) of Shakopee, MN; his grandchildren, Karson Reither of Lakeland, MN, Dalton Reither of Algona, IA, Elizabeth Heckel, Rachel Heckel and Sarah Heckel of Shakopee, MN; his great grandchild Breckynn Hanson of Lakeland, MN; and his siblings, Vaughn Heckel (Peggy) of Spearfish, SD, Dane Heckel of Ronan, MT, Vicki Hamblet (James) of Ramsey, MN and Debbie Blackledge (Jeff) of Stronghurst, IL. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to a local nonprofit to help people in need.
