It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Matt Bernard in Pierre, South Dakota, born in Havana, North Dakota, who passed away on December 9, 2023, at the age of 78, leaving to mourn family and friends. He was predeceased by: his parents, Mathias Bernard and Theresa Bernard (Eckhardt); his brothers, David and Roger (Audrey); and his niece Sandra Kelly.

He is survived by: his sons, Ben (Scarlet) and Lawrence (Roxanne); his wife Linda; his grandchildren, Perrin and Ian; his sister Carol Kelly (Roger); and his sister-in-law Joanne Bernard.

“I am so sorry to hear of Matt's passing. Our mutual friend Herb Bollig let me know. I worked with Matt for about 15 years while Matt was the manager at Jackson NFH Valley City NFH and Garrison NFH and I was in the Denver Regional Office. He was always able to get the job done no matter what he was asked to do. He was truly dedicated to the mission of the USF&WS Nation Fish Hatchery system. Your family can be very proud of his service in the USFWS and its fish hatchery program. Larry Visscher”
