He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Sommer and Josephine Sommer (Schmidt); his son Gerard; his siblings, Lorraine Fischer and Ronald Sommer; and his brothers-in-law, Bernard Fischer and Francis Stadlman.
He is survived by: his wife Joan B. Mechtenberg; his children, Cindy Schoenfelder (Dave) of Parkston, Cathy Schipke (Stewart) of Aberdeen, SD, Carol Tschetter (Jim) of Huron, SD, Carla Marken (Tyler) of Aberdeen, Glen Sommer (DeVonne) of Mitchell, SD and Greg Sommer (Ann) of Marshfield, WI; his sister Pyllis Stadlman of Parkston; his grandchildren, Eric, Teressa, Cory, Tara, Cade, Nick, Brook, Austin, Abby, Tierney, Trinn, Eilert, Katelyn, Ashton and Levi; and his great grandchildren, Lexi, Easton, Noah, Ellie, Kye, Styerling and Eva.
