He was predeceased by: his parents, Nels Nelson and Clara Nelson (Gatton); his son Troy; his parents-in-law, John and Evelyn Connor; his daughter-in-law Sherry Nelson; his sister Judy; and his siblings-in-law, Ardis, Darrel, Delbert, Dennis, Albert, Larry, Rocky and Steve.

He is survived by: his wife Connie Connor of Mitchell, SD; his son-in-law Craig; his children, Tim Nelson (Sandy) of Church Point, LA, Scott Nelson of Mitchell, SD, Crystal Vanden Bos (Lynn) of Stickney, SD and Gena Anderson (Craig); his grandchildren, Kayonnie Kitto (Brandon), Gary JC Nelson (Allie) of Sandy Gray, CJ, Marcus Anderson, Shaniya Drewes (Cody), Samantha Anderson, Noah Vanden Bos, Gyver Vanden Bos, Xander Vanden Bos, Taylor Nelson, Deseray McGlothlin and Christina Martin; his great grandchildren, Jake Roberts (Alex), Savannah Roberts, Robyn Roberts, Caleb Roberts (Melissa), Kynlee Kitto, Bentlee Kitto, Everlee Kitto, Adeline Drewes, Jaxon Johnson, Tookie McGlothlin, Tanna McGlothlin, Grayson McGlothlin and Cecil McGlothlin; his great great grandchildren, Willow Roberts, Zyla Roberts, Dominik Roberts and Jackson Roberts; his sisters, Vicki Mundy of Mitchell, SD and Lori Burbach (Roger) of Parkston, SD; and his siblings-in-law, Gordon Connor (Mary Jo) of Abilene, TX and Donna Connor of Artesian, SD.
