He was predeceased by: his parents, Guy Barnes and Grace Irene Barnes (Jensen); his son Nathan Barnes; his siblings, Ward D Barnes, William and Linda; his nephew Jim Holdahl; and his brothers-in-law, Adam Derschan, Lonnie Thom, Ron Holdahl and Bob Holdahl.

He is survived by: his children, Matthew of Lemmon, SD and Courtney Hulm (Dakota) of Bison, SD; his grandchildren, Sierra Bucks (Kaleb), Emma Barnes, Lakyn and Lander Hulm; his great grandchild Briar Bucks; and his siblings, Delilah Holdahl, Bernita Barnes of Lemmon, SD, Mary Holdahl of Yankton, SD, Wayne Barnes (Vicki) and Willard Barnes of Lemmon, SD.

“Courtney and Matthew, I'm so sorry i to hear of your dads passing. Losing your dad is probably one of him he hardest things we have to do for they are not very far from our thoughts..They guided us thru our lives with possibly the greatest love we will ever know and yet we took them for granted and thought we wouldn't lose them ever. In truth we don't lose the allies we love for they are there as we look up in the sky and we see the brightest star in heaven for all they've taught us.”
