He was predeceased by: his parents, Katherine Hertel and Emil Hertel; his son Michael; his wife Mary "Amy"; and his siblings, Iola, Lester, Julius, Eugene, Ronnie, Marilyn and Zella (Snooky).

He is survived by: his children, Scott, Mark (Pia), Debra Wilbourn (Barry) and LeAnn Vandine (George); his grandchildren, Nathan Wilbourn (Janny), Megan Wilbourn, Danielle Hertel, Joshua Hertel, Bailey Willard (Tanner), Thomas Hertel (Michelle), Elizabeth Hancock (Ronnie), George Warren Vandine (Savannah) and Wade Vandine (Karli); his great grandchildren, Landon Wilbourn, Rhett Willard, Theodore Hertel, Wyatt Hancock and Graham Vandine; and his siblings, Margie, Marvin (Lesa) and Kenny (Virginia). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church.
