He was predeceased by: his parents, Richard Mertens (Dick) and Emma Brodrecht Mertens; his parents-in-law, Jean Faber Moore and Raymond Moore; and his sister-in-law Jean Mertens.

He is survived by: his wife Betty Jean; his children, Lorri Wagner (Tim) and Trusty (Beth); his grandchildren, Tate, Kacie, Tance, Kenzie, Grace, Josephine and Amber; and his siblings, Rich and Kathy Diehm (Gary).
