He was predeceased by: his parents, William Smith and Alice Smith (Zahn); and his sisters, Alice "Skeets" and Roberta "Helen". He is survived by: his wife LaVonne of Pierre; his children, Yancey Smith of Rapid City, Penny Kelley (Dave) of Pierre and Al Matthews (Kolette) of Kadoka; his sister Irene Alexander of Topeka, KS; his grandchildren, Abby Maidl (Matt), Mallory Matthews, Will Smith (Heather), Abigail Smith, Rozara Kelley and Alex Kelley; and his great grandchildren, Timothy and Naomi Maidl.
