He was predeceased by: his parents, Josephine Hartung (Schumacher) and Anton Hartung; his son James; and his siblings, Ray, Bill, Leo, Richard and Frances Rusza.
He is survived by: his daughter-in-law Kate; his wife Loretta Fix; his children, Scott Hartung (Kate) of Redfield, SD, Deb Kindelspire (Mark) of Faulkton, SD, Jeanie Lagan (Curtis) of Gettysburg, SD and Kim Knecht (Paul) of Pierre, SD; and his sisters, Bernice Harty of Yankton, SD and Evelyn Mikuska (Bill) of Tripp, SD. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
