He was predeceased by: his parents, Benedict Wirkus and Clara Wirkus (Gaikowski) of Grenville, SD; his daughter Kelly Wirkus; and his brother Richard Wirkus. He is survived by: his wife Diane Wirkus of Dell Rapids; his sister Audrey Wirkus (Bill Worley) of Bethel, MN; his sister-in-law Bonnie Wirkus of Lennox; his nephews, David (Nikki Wirkus), Rich (Alicia Wirkus) and Michael (Amber Wirkus); his niece Mitch Rayman of Baltic; and his siblings-in-law, Gary Kangas (Jan), Dale Kangas (Janne), Dewayne Kangas (Shari) and Jane Youngblood (Doug). He is also survived by his many nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flower, memorials may be directed to the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids.
