He is survived by: his daughter Jenny; his wife Arbutus Winter of Custer; his children, Jack Winter (Mary Moe) of Huron, JoAnn Stearns (Dan) of Elk Mountain and Jennifer Behlings (Timothy) of Custer; his grandchildren, Anna Winter (Tony Vandenberg) of Lebanon, N. H., Jay Winter (Belinda Songer) of Huron, Dalton Stearns (Dani), Morgan Stearns (Jessie) of Elk Mountain, Russell Behlings (Tessah) of Lake Nebagamon, Wis and Joshua Behlings (Courtney) of Mazama, Wash.; and his great grandchildren, Dierk Stearns, Dillon Stearns and Ellen Behlings.
A memorial has been established in Jim's name to benefit the Custer Lutheran Fellowship Church.
