It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Joan E. Carey of Brookings, South Dakota, born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, who passed away on August 29, 2022, at the age of 79, leaving to mourn family and friends. She was predeceased by: her husband James Carey; her son Nicholas; her parents, Anton Hiess and Mildred Hiess (Meyer); her parents-in-law, Robert and Grace Carey; her brothers, Joseph Hiess (Harriet) and Jerry Hiess; and her sister-in-law Carol Hiess.

She is survived by: her sons, Pat Carey (Patty) of Brookings, SD and Dan Carey (Katie) of Peoria, IL; her granddaughters, Katelyn Wurth (Paul) of Sioux Falls, SD, Stephanie Carey of Brookings, SD, Megan and Molly Carey of Peoria, IL; her great grandchildren, Zoe and Cameron Wurth; her siblings, Yvonne Hiess, Chippewa Falls, Anita Zwiefelhofer (Art) of Eau Claire, WI and Norbert Hiess (Emilia) of Custer, WI; and her sisters-in-law, Jane Hiess of Chippewa Falls, WI and Peggy Nelson (Jim) of Chippewa Falls, WI. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews along with many cherished friends and co-workers.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Greenwood Cemetery.
