Edward Bain Sr. Obituary
Edward James Bain Sr. 87, of Brookings, SD, passed away March 7, 2018 at Edgewood Vista, Brookings, SD. Memorial Services will be held at 10:30am Monday, March 12, 2018 at GracePoint Wesleyan Church, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Monday. Burial of cremated remains will be held at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota.
The family suggest in lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Food Pantry or Salvation Army. Rude's Funeral Home, Brookings, SD is assisting the family with the arrangements. Edward James Bain Sr. was born on April 29, 1930, son of Walter and Violet (Glenn) Bain in Bushnell, South Dakota. He attended and graduated from Bushnell Country School and received his GED while serving in the United States Air Force.
Edward worked for Bailey Tire Shop in Brookings, South Dakota until his enlistment in the United States Air Force in 1951 and had a long and distinguished career in the United States Air Force. His military service encompassed two tours of duty in Korea, one tour in Vietnam, as well as numerous stations in the United States.
He retired from the United States Air Force in 1974. Ed married Irene Becker on June 24, 1953, in White, South Dakota. Together they were blessed to have and raise three children; one son, Edward Jr; two daughters, Carla and Sheri. After retiring from the Air Force, Ed and Irene bought an acreage in Brookings County and Ed had a cow-calf operation.
The two of them moved to Brookings, South Dakota in 1996. Ed worked part time for Park and Recreation in the summer for a few years. Ed moved to Edgewood in March of 2017. Ed is survived by his wife, Irene of Brookings, South Dakota; one son, Edward Jr. (Donna) Bain of Volga, South Dakota; two daughters, Carla (Alex) Akamine of California, Sheri (Sam Gunderson) Polenz Bain of Rapid City, South Dakota; five grandchildren, two great grandsons; one sister, Mary (Larry) Kappenman of Las Gatos, California; one brother-in-law, Marvin Eastberg of Watertown, South Dakota.
He is preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law, Mark Polenz; two brothers, Francis and Benny Bain; two sisters, Goldie Beynon and Lorraine Eastberg.
