He was predeceased by: his parents, Reinder Dertien and Edna Dertien (Odeen); and his sisters, Darlene, Fran and Linda.

He is survived by: his nieces and nephews, Dawn (Dwayne Dohn), Kimberly Mensch (Kent Holder) of Platte Woods, MO, Kate Mensch (Mark Tuniewicz) of Ensenada, MX, Kris (Mark Cahoy), Gene Foster of Sioux Falls and Korey Mensch of Avon.
