He was predeceased by: his parents, Adolph Heckel and Rose Heckel (Libis); his wife Joanne McKittrick; and his brother Marlin. He is survived by: his children, Peggy Robbins (Steve) of Eldora, IA, Thomas Heckel (Cindy) of Sioux Falls, Tammy Larson (Lydell) of Sioux Falls and Paul Heckel (Lenora) of Sioux Falls; his grandchildren, Stephanie Boeding (Jay), Erin Campbell (Doug), Nick Robbins (Karla), Amanda McCurley (Dan), Robert Heckel (Jennifer), Scott Heckel (Melissa), Kristin Dwire (Andrew), Michelle Benck (Josh), Kathryne Studer (Jake), Layne Larson (Kaci) and Emma Heckel; his great grandchildren, Xavier, Leo Boeding, Molly, Nora Campbell, Avalyn, Elaina, Danielle, Kathryn Robbins, Mabel, Harriet McCurley, Teigen Heckel, Phoenix Heckel, Avery, Adeline Heckel, Connor, Abel Dwire, Evelyn Benck, Camden and Adriana Studer; and his sister-in-law Alice Heckel. He is also survived by cousins, nieces and nephews.

He cared for his parents in their later years and took care of Joanne during her final years with Alzheimer's.
