He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Thistle and Cozetta Thistle (Turner); his son Todd Thistle; and his brothers, Charles and Harry Thistle.

He is survived by: his wife Esther Ray; his sons, Randy Thistle (Stacy) of Bemidji, MN and Vernon Thistle (Tammy); his grandchildren, Nathan Thistle, Geoff Thistle, Jenelle Richards (Mike) and Jordan Thistle (Jessica); and his great grandchildren, Aeris and Seph Thistle.
