He was predeceased by: his parents, Benjamin Levi Knighton and Annie Grubbs Knighton; and his sister Pearl Eller. He is survived by: his wife Nancy Turner Knighton; his son Benjamin Stefan Knighton (Lisa Baker Knighton); his grandsons, Joshua Knighton, Brandon Knighton and Tyler Knighton; and his sisters, Betty Jo Hughes, Allene Kuykendall and Mayzell Betsill.
