He was predeceased by: his parents, Floyd Smythe and Velma McManus Smythe; his daughter Emily Smythe Nelson; and also Mary Elizabeth Britt Smythe. He is survived by: his close friend Norma Darlene Spoon of Fort Mill; his son Dr. Thomas I. Smythe, Jr.; his daughter-in-law Melissa of Ft. Myers, Florida; his grandchildren, Victor Nelson of Charleston, S. C., Meagan Smythe (Xastin Sansos) of Hendersonville, N. C. and Erica Smythe of Columbia, S. C.; his brother-in-law Rev. Charles H. Mercer, Sr. of Durham, N. C.; his nephews, Jimmy Scott (Nathalie Côté) of Fort Mill, S. C. and Charles Mercer, Jr. (Alene) of Raleigh, N. C.; and his niece Mary Smythe Mercer of Raleigh, N. C..
