He was predeceased by: his parents, George Payne and Willie Mae Lewis Payne; and his siblings, George Payne, Wendell Payne, Billie Rogers and Inez Duke.

He is survived by: his wife Elizabeth Thomas Payne; his children, John Brenton Payne (Carrine) of Norman, OK, William Ethan Payne (Tracy) of Metter, GA and Amanda Ann Harris (Danny) of Rutherfordton, NC; and his grandchildren, Austin Payne, Malea Hunter, Landon Harris and Conner Payne.
